Our Story

From a Seabee’s Vision to Vermont’s Legacy

Randy Munson wasn’t just a UVM engineering grad; he was a “child of the earth”. He grew up in Shelburne with a passion for damming up water and working in the earth. For Randy, playing with dump trucks as a child wasn’t just a game; it was a rehearsal.

His ‘Can Do’ attitude was forged during his time in the U.S. Navy Seabees (Construction Battalion). After serving in places like Newfoundland and Morocco, Randy returned home to Vermont with a clear vision.

A $5,000 Loan and a Cat D6

In 1957, Randy borrowed $5,000 from his father to purchase his first machine: a Cat D6 Bulldozer. His first job wasn’t a massive highway; it was building six earthen dams for a local farm in Shelburne.

The company quickly grew from equipment rentals to bidding on major contracts for municipalities and the State of Vermont. Munson Earth Moving became known for tackling the most challenging jobs in the region.

Building Vermont’s Landmarks

Over the decades, the Munson fleet tackled landmark projects that define our modern landscape. These included the challenging 58-acre site preparation for IBM’s expansion into Williston, the Guilford Welcome Center, and the first artificial turf field in Vermont—Munson Field at South Burlington High School.

Today, the fleet is larger and the technology has evolved, but Randy’s original philosophy remains: a love for the earth and a hands-on approach. He always said he’d “rather be out driving the equipment than in his office”. That passion is the foundation we’re still building on today.
